BRC No. | RBRC01221 |
Type | Inbred |
Species | Mus musculus |
Strain name | SM/J |
Former Common name | |
H-2 Haplotype | |
ES Cell line | |
Background strain | SM |
Appearance | black [a/a] white-bellied agouti [A<w>/a] |
Strain development | Developed by MacArthur in 1939. The SM/J strain was produced by crossing seven inbred strains including DBA and selecting for small body size. This strain was introduced to National Institute of Genetics from the Jackson laboratory in 1985, subsequently maintained by Dr. Masahiko Nishimura at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, and then Nagoya University. |
Strain description | The SM/J strain is segregating inbred strain for the agouti alleles white-bellied agouti (A<w>) and black (a). Developed by MacArthur in 1939. These mice are susceptible to diet-induced atherosclerosis and obesity without diabetes. The body size is small at birth and weaning, but attain a normal body weight as the animals mature. |
Colony maintenance | Sibling mating (white-bellied agouti x black) |
